For donors interested in supporting education, there are several giving options to explore. We encourage you to contact the Community Foundation to learn how we can help you fulfill your charitable intentions.
The Fund for Educational Excellence: DonorsChoose.org
The endowed Fund for Educational Excellence (FFEE) was created in 1990 by a group of business, school, and private community leaders for the benefit of Linn County K-12 students. Since that time FFEE has annually made grant awards to support teachers in creative, innovative, and effective classroom projects.
In 2015, the Community Foundation began a partnership with DonorsChoose.org, a nonprofit organization that makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need, to match gifts to help fund classroom projects in Linn County, Iowa. Linn County public school teachers have the opportunity to submit classroom project requests to DonorsChoose.org; donors are able to give any amount to the projects that inspire them; and the Community Foundation provides a 1:1 match for each donation for projects totaling $2,000 or less.
In 2018, the Community Foundation had $25,000 of funding available beginning on August 1, 2018. Eighty-seven teachers participated from 38 schools in Linn County. One-hundred-two projects were funded – reaching 7,267 students. The funding for the match was used up by November 12, 2018.
This year the Community Foundation again will have $25,000 available in matching funds for Linn County teacher projects beginning August 1.
