On December 1, the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation’s Nonprofit Network and the United Way of East Central Iowa hosted three free screenings of UnCharitable at an early #GivingTuesday event. The documentary poses tough questions about philanthropy and how we support nonprofit organizations.

“For our nonprofits to fulfill their missions and to change the world, we need to focus on their results, and stop looking so heavily at overhead,” said Brad Hart, local attorney and former mayor of Cedar Rapids. “We can and should invest more in nonprofits, including funding their ability to attract and retain top talent, to help them better serve our communities. It’s time to shift our funding toward real, lasting change.’”

The film has been well received by nonprofits, community leaders, and donors alike. This was the third local screening and is part of the Community Foundation’s effort to challenge common assumptions about the nonprofit sector and encourage unrestricted support for organizations serving Linn County.

UnCharitable challenges what we think we know about nonprofits and how we support their work,” said Carrie Walker, Vice President of Learning. “It also lays out a new way of giving that empowers nonprofits to achieve their missions.”
