The Vice President of Development leads the Development Team that implements a high-touch, relational approach; efficient and effective processes and systems; and alignment of this work with other Community Foundation teams and with the overall foundation mission and vision.

The salary range for this position is $97,500 – $116,000, depending upon experience.

Summary: 

The Vice President of Development (VPD) is responsible for the asset development activities of the Community Foundation. This includes identifying and executing on strategies that enhance the Community Foundation’s effectiveness in cultivating donors and prospects; and connecting donors to community needs and opportunities while helping donors accomplish broader philanthropic interests. The VPD supports relationships with top level donors. The VPD leads the Development Team to support a high-touch, relational approach with efficient and effective processes and systems, and aligns the asset development work with other Community Foundation teams, collaborating to realize the overall foundation mission and vision.

The VPD works closely with the President & CEO, is a member of the Leadership Team, attends Board of Directors meetings, and provides staff leadership to the board-level Development Committee.

Essential Functions:

Leadership

  • Maintains a high level of visibility and provides ideas and expertise on asset development in the community. 
  • Develops and articulates an asset development strategy in partnership with the President & CEO.
  • Leads the creation of an annual and long-term asset development plan in support of the Community Foundation’s strategic plan and goals.
  • Manages the Development Team, setting vision and expectations and providing or coordinating ongoing training and professional development for team members.
  • Ensures the design and implementation of activities necessary to meet development goals, including special programs, events, and specific efforts to increase major and planned gift acquisition.
  • Develops metrics for monitoring the progress of the development program and provides reports to the President, Development Committee and Board of Directors on the status of the work, in partnership with the Systems Analyst.
  • Serves as a member of the Community Foundation Leadership Team to:
    • Design and implement aligned strategies and priorities across the organization
    • Support operational excellence
    • Maintain a positive work culture
    • Steward the mission, vision, and values of the Community Foundation.

Asset and Donor Development

  • Identifies, cultivates, and secures new donors; facilitates gifts from prospective and existing donors including non-cash, deferred, and testamentary gifts. Provides stewardship for major donors, individual prospects, professional advisors (attorneys, accountants, financial advisors and planners), nonprofit and community groups to encourage giving to/through the Community Foundation.
  • Assists donors in clarifying their philanthropic goals and finding pathways to achieve them.
  • Ensures an inclusive and engaged strategy with the William Quarton Heritage Society and maintains contact with its members.
  • Fosters an active engagement strategy with professional advisors.
  • Develops and supports a top-tier approach to philanthropic advising services, including family philanthropy donors.
  • Oversees strategy meetings with the Development Officers to support donor development activities with their assigned portfolio of fund holders.
  • Works with Development Team to:
    • Develop, maintain, and update fund policies and procedures
    • Manage processes for gift acceptance and acknowledgement and for the administration of current and deferred gifts and creation of new funds.
  • Ensures that asset development policy and procedures comply with legal requirements and adheres to Community Foundation National Standards; stays abreast of policy changes, legal, and technical issues related to donors and gifts; advises the Board of Directors and staff on these issues as necessary.

 Philanthropic Services

  • Manages the members of the Development Team and collaborates with Systems Analyst, Director of Learning, Program Team, and Finance Team to:
    • Ensure proper administration and stewardship of funds, gifts, charitable trusts, deferred gifts, gifts of property and complex gifts
    • Maintain the growth and accuracy of the donor database, and track/record all donor information, communications, and special requests regarding gifts and/or funds
    • Provide donors with helpful information on emerging opportunities, current issues in the nonprofit community, other relevant learning opportunities, and timely and accurate reports regarding fund activity and the impact of gifts.

 Donor Communications

  • Works closely with the Marketing Team to:
    • Develop marketing tools for all development initiatives and charitable giving programs and communicate new donor and fund development success to the Board of Directors, donors, and the general community
    • Maintain the charitable giving content of the Community Foundation website
    • Develop and deliver donor relations projects, including donor recognition and education events.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  

Direct supervision of Senior Director of Development Services, Director of Family Philanthropy, Development Officers.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: 

  • Full-time.
  • Office hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Evening and weekend engagements as needed.
  • Hybrid work arrangements are offered.

Preferred Education and Experience: 

Bachelor’s degree and five to ten years professional experience in development or a closely related field is required, along with three or more years of management experience.  Demonstrated ability to raise funds from individuals, businesses, private foundations and other potential contributors and in-depth knowledge of major gifts or planned giving is required. Strong knowledge of the full range of deferred giving vehicles and the tax laws related to charitable giving and experience in developing and implementing successful planned and major gift programs is also preferred. 

Fundraising credentialling such as CFRE, CAP, or another designation, and existing membership in a professional development organization such as Eastern Iowa Estate Planning Council, Association of Fundraising Professionals, or similar organization preferred. Bi-lingual/multi-lingual preferred to support the changing demographics of the county.
