Give on #GivingTuesday: December 3, 2019

LINN COUNTY, IOWA – Nonprofit organizations in Linn County are spreading awareness for #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide.

Occurring this year on December 3, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  #GivingTuesday provides a kick-off to the holiday giving season to give back to the charities and causes community members support.

“Local nonprofit organizations need the support of our community members,” says Carrie Walker, Nonprofit Network Manager at the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation. “#GivingTuesday is the perfect time to search online for a cause they are passionate about and find out how they can participate. A wide variety of local nonprofits are addressing our community’s needs and quality of life.”

Founded in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y – a community and cultural center in New York City − #GivingTuesday inspired millions of people to give back and support the causes they believe in. Over $300 million was raised online to benefit a tremendously broad range of organizations, and much more was given in volunteer hours, donations of food and clothing, and acts of kindness.

“#GivingTuesday inspires people all around the world to embrace their power to drive progress around the causes they care about, not just on one day but throughout the year.” said Asha Curran, #GivingTuesday’s CEO, and co-founder. “With country and community leaders, millions of organizations, and countless givers of all kinds, #GivingTuesday is creating a shared space where we can see the radical implications of a more generous world.”
