What is Capacity Building?

Capacity building enables nonprofit organizations to develop the strategies, systems, structures, and skills they need to strengthen their organization.  Where a nonprofit organization needs to build capacity depends on many factors, including its age, operating budget, program model(s), and revenue base.

How does an organization determine priorities in building its capacity?  Update or development of an organization’s strategic plan includes some degree of organizational assessment within the process, but more formal organizational assessment may also be appropriate.

The Community Foundation seeks to support and strengthen nonprofit organizations through the Nonprofit Network and through capacity-building grants from the Organizational Development Fund.
