ABOUT
In May 1970, Lee Ducat, Carol and Erwin Lurie, and a group of parents whose children had type 1 diabetes (T1D) came together to form the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (now known internationally as Breakthrough T1D). This group of caring and committed parents believed that T1D could and would be cured through research. Today, Breakthrough T1D has 29 U.S. chapters and five international affiliates leading the fight against T1D by funding research, advocating for policies that accelerate access to new therapies, and providing a support network for millions of people worldwide. The legacy left by these loving parents is a 25-year increase in life expectancy for people with T1D. As the leading global T1D research and advocacy organization, we help improve everyday life while driving toward cures. We are opening doors that were once closed by T1D diagnosis. We lead the way to more effective solutions by connecting the brightest minds to advance treatments, influence policy, and improve access to care. By driving innovation forward, we will make T1D a thing of the past.
Breakthrough T1D has four key programs which include Advocacy, Walk, Promise Gala and Outreach. Advocacy and Outreach are year-round programs and are essential to the mission of Breakthrough T1D. The Promise Gala and Walk are fundraising events, put on once a year. Breakthrough T1D’s Advocacy program supports efforts in Congress to provide funding and enact policy changes that will advance T1D research and improve the quality of life for those with diabetes. Our program is set up to make it easy for our constituents to reach out to Iowa Congressmen and Representatives to advocate for national initiatives like the Special Diabetes Program. Outreach is a very important program at Breakthrough T1D. Each time a child is newly diagnosed, we deliver a Breakthrough T1D Bag of Hope and offers other resources to the family for the easiest possible transition to their new normal. Outreach also offers a wide array of resources for people that have been living with T1D as well as free activities and events for T1D families to meet one another and interact. Our Promise Gala is focused on raising funds to support Breakthrough T1D’s mission and includes dinner, cocktails, first-class entertainment, a silent and live auction and Breakthrough T1D’s signature Fund A Cure program, where 100% of money raised goes directly to research. Breakthrough T1D Walk is our organization’s flagship fundraising event and every year it brings together over 2,000 people in a celebration for months of hard work and fundraising.
