Youth POWER is a youth philanthropy program of The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation begun in 2001. This group of teen leaders give $10,000 per year to organizations and groups that apply to Youth POWER for a grant. The youth board gives away the funds to support projects addressing issues of youth in the community.
Youth POWER gives young people the opportunity to voice their opinions and make important decisions on issues that affect them. The program helps youth discover and understand the greatest needs in the community and allows them to decide how to respond.
The 2006-2007 Youth POWER board consists of 15 high school youth from throughout Linn County. The program is designed and run in collaboration with the youth. Everything, including the mission statement, name, logo, recruitment process, and grant selection criteria is their work. A student director under the supervision of the Director of Programs facilitates the program. The core activities are:
Grantmaking Award grants totaling $10,000 from a field of applicants Conduct needs assessments through research and interviews Applicant interviews Reading and scoring grant applications Grant award ceremony in May
Community service, stewardship, and volunteerism Volunteer Fair September 2006 -- The goal of the Fair is to introduce Linn County students to and encourage their participation in volunteerism and community service.
Midwest Youth Philanthropy Network Four Midwest youth philanthropy groups partnered and received a Kellogg Foundation grant for the establishment of a network of Youth Philanthropy programs in Iowa and Nebraska. Two Youth POWER board members serve as members of the Leadership Team for the Midwest Youth Philanthropy Network.
