Fifteen in 5
Five years and 15 ideas ago, on May 11, 2005, the Cedar Rapids community rallied around a unique community planning process with a mission to accomplish 15 great ideas by the end of 2010. Launched in partnership by the Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, Fifteen in 5 was designed to create a discussion about the kind of place we would like to see our community become. Each of the 15 initiatives has been led by a committee chair and supported by nearly 1,000 community volunteers. The ideas are:
1. Designate an arts and entertainment district along 3rd Street SE.
2. Make health care accessible to the underserved.
3. Grow and sustain locally-owned businesses.
4. Make parks more attractive to youth and families.
5. Develop the riverfront.
6. Expand downtown housing.
7. Create a year-round district along Rockford Road SW.
8. Rejuvenate abandoned and deteriorating commercial property.
9. Build a state-of-the-art activity center.
10. Empower neighborhoods.
11. Upgrade and expand the US Cellular Center.
12. Develop and implement a comprehensive solid waste management plan.
13. Connect and expand Linn County trails.
14. Launch a best-in-the-nation early childhood education program.
15. Develop light rail service.
As of May 11, 2010 our community has made significant progress with implementing the 15 ideas in spite of challenges impacting our community: the flood of 2008, an economic downturn and community leadership transitions. The summary report below provides background on each of the initiatives, challenges and goals achieved.
